Ultra-fine Grinding of High-Purity Quartz in Taiwan

1. Project Background

The client is a leading electronic materials supplier in Taiwan, specializing in high-purity quartz powder used in semiconductor packaging, Copper Clad Laminates (CCL), and optical glass. Due to the rigorous demands of end-use applications regarding impurity levels and particle size distribution, they sought an advanced solution for the ultra-fine grinding of high-purity quartz that could ensure “zero contamination” throughout the production process.

The Challenge: Quartz has a high Mohs hardness of 7, making traditional grinding methods prone to heavy equipment wear and metallic contamination. Furthermore, the client required a finished product with a D50 = 3.5μm and an extremely narrow particle size distribution to ensure optimal filler loading for downstream applications.

2. The Solution: Epic Powder Jet Mill

To meet the high-quality standards of the Taiwanese market, the jet mill system integrated several core technologies to optimize the ultra-fine grinding of high-purity quartz:

  • Full Ceramic Lining Protection:To achieve true “high-purity” processing, all components in contact with the material—including nozzles, the classifier wheel, and internal walls—were lined with Alumina or Silicon Carbide ceramics. This completely eliminated the risk of metallic impurity ingress during the grinding process.
  • Self-Grinding Principle:The jet mill utilizes high-speed airflow to cause quartz particles to collide and rub against each other. Since the material grinds against itself rather than the machine body, equipment wear is significantly reduced, and the service life is extended.
  • Integrated High-Precision Classification:The system features a high-performance horizontal classifier wheel with real-time speed adjustment. By balancing centrifugal force and air drag, the system consistently stabilized the product at D50 = 3.5μm while effectively rejecting oversized particles.
  • Low-Temperature Processing:The cooling effect generated by air expansion keeps the entire process at ambient temperature, ensuring the physical and chemical stability of the quartz material.

3. Technical Parameters & Achieved Results

To address the physical properties of high-purity quartz, Epic Powder deployed a Fluidized Bed Jet Mill system.
